The Hollotoli School, put on quite a celebration to bring forth the theme of the World Environment Day, Think. Eat. Save to its student. The event was co- sponsored by Dimapur District Legal Service Authority, who believes it is their legal responsibility to encourage education of the environment. A very joyful event as students whole heatedly took to the celebration. They performed a varied number of musicals, dances, presentation and skits, with the staff helping them shoulder to shoulder.
The overarching theme of every performance was to instill environment consciousness some being deforestation, air pollution, water pollution and food wastage. Of the many performances, a skit depicting the Gandhian Chipko Movement with children dressed as trees won many applauds from the audience.
Besides performances, there was also a Poster making competitions for children from Nursery to Class V. The poster had to be accompanied with a catchy slogan on the theme Think.Eat.Save. While the children drew their best imaginations, they also came up with interesting and reflective slogans. “We plant trees, we plant the seeds of hope”, is one such slogan written by Sentionla Longchar of Class IV.
The school had organized an extempore speech competition too. Some topics that the children spoke on were, Conservation of Forest, Noise Pollution and the significance of Environment Day celebration. Nishant Sharma, Class X was adjudged the best in his group and Muskaan Aggarwal, Class VI in hers. They were presented with awards given by Meznolu Therieh, Deputy Secretary for the Dimapur District Legal Service Authority and Allin Benjamin, Principal. M. Therieh also gave a beautiful speech to the children, explaining to them the affect our food chain could have due to a small phenomenon, as the extinction of Tigers and how the world is interdependent.
The silver lining of the celebration was the School’s announcement of its advances towards making their campus environment friendly and the students more conscious. “We are forming an Eco Club on this day, so children are taught from a young age of how their environment should be preserved”, said Moushmi. Members of the Eco Club will monitor that there is no food wastage in the school mess, as much as every student was told to watch their eating practices.
“We will be building a mini organic vegetable farm which will practice crop residue, animal manure and vermin compost. Also, a Botanical garden where medicinal plants grown in Nagaland will be cultivated”, said Shabana. The school is banning the use of polythene on campus.
With all these promises taken, concerns raised and awareness discourses, Hollotoli is well on its way to make their students better citizens of the world. Hopefully, these teachings at school will resonate in every student’s daily life.
