Kohima | July 29 : Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar today appealed to the legislators to evolve stringent laws which can protect women from every type of atrocities against them, not only for the state but also for the country. Addressing the state level seminar on “Atrocities Against Women” organized by Nagaland State Commission for Women and Department of Women Development at the Heritage in Kohima this morning, Kumar said that gender discrimination was the root cause of all evils against women and stressed on the the need for gender equality in society, where women live a fearless life with their fundamental rights.

Kumar also said that to bring a social change in Naga society, women organizations and women Hohos must play a greater role to create awareness and respect and to look forward for the future so that the women also can take part in every step with the men. The Governor hoped that the seminar will be a very successful one and appealed to the state government to consider the recommendation of the resolution of the seminar for the greater interest of women, as well to bring down the crime rate against women.
Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSWC) chairperson Sano Vamuzo expressed concern over the increasing atrocities against women throughout the country, including Nagaland and informed that the objective of the today’s seminar was to bring together the stakeholders such as the political and social leaders, administrators, police, judiciary, NGOs, media and all related partners to collaborate meaningfully with each other with deliberation from deeper insights to curb this social menace.
Sano said that atrocities against women have become an unfortunate reality, and sadly on the rise as it has become a daily affair in many women’s lives. Violence persists despite decades of advocacy and activism in different forms by women’s movements, enactment of laws and comprehensive action plans adopted by world governments.
Stating that we cannot move forward unless there is communal dedication and commitment, she said, “It should be the duty of all the concerned, and not only women to check atrocities against women.”
She also said that the Church being a very important platform for reformation of the society, should stress on the need to counsel and exhort their members in building healthy relationships at the most basic, yet crucial level of families.
She further appealed to all the leaders and concerned citizens to come forward with their wisdom, reflections and ideas to make atrocities against women, history, adding that “ the results will surely be worthwhile, as our society will be able to focus its energy and efforts in far more important activities and more forward in maturity.”
She also reminded the White Ribbon Campaign taken up by the NSWC last year and appealed to all to join the campaign for the safeguard of women. She also said that Churches in Nagaland hold very important platform of the society, who can counsel and exhort their respective members in building a women atrocity free society.
Earlier, Nagaland Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Banuo Z. Jamir encouraged the participants of the Seminar, specially the men, to raise their strong voices against atrocities on women and to condemn all incidents at all levels of the society. She also said that there are some instances of settling many cases out of court with a simple fine, which should not be accepted and all cases against women should be settled only in the court of law.
She also emphasized on the importance of social networking saying that building awareness is essential and also opined that the network should maintain link with the law enforcing agencies. Banuo maintained that violence against women has been a crucial issue in the contemporary Indian and Naga society and voiced out that more seminars on women should be organized so that shame and fear will be dispelled.
Earlier the programme was chaired by Director Women Development, Nagaland, Neilavou Keditsu while Narola Women secretary NBCC pronounced invocation. Member NSCW, Abeni, TCK proposed vote of thanks.
In the afternoon session, Justice H.K Sema, former judge, Supreme Court of India, presently the chairman UP, Human Rights Commission highlighted on the constitutional rights of women. Other resource persons included Expert Member on NE, NCW, Rosemary Dzuvichu spoke on “Present Scenario of Atrocities Against Women”, AD& SJ Kohima, while Mayanglima spoke on “Domestic Violence Act/ITPA Act”, and DIG (Modern & Planning), Renchamo P.Kikon IPS spoke on “Role of Police in safeguarding Women’s Rights”.
