‘GST a game changer for Nagaland’

State’s top contributors honoured on GST Day 2025

DIMAPUR, JULY 1 (MExN): The Office of the Commissioner of State Taxes, Nagaland, in collaboration with the Commissioner of Central GST, Dimapur, observed GST Day 2025 under the theme “GST: Simplifying Taxes; Empowering Citizens” at the State Taxes Conference Hall, Dimapur, on Monday.

Marking the 8th anniversary of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the celebration highlighted the reform's role in unifying the country's indirect tax system since its rollout on July 1, 2017. The event emphasized simplification, digital accessibility, and improved taxpayer engagement.

Speaking at the function, Additional Commissioner of CGST, Sashi Wapang Lanu, termed GST a “game-changer” for Nagaland. Addressing tax officers, business representatives, and officials from both Centre and state, he noted that GST has integrated Nagaland with the national economy and strengthened revenue for development.

Lanu highlighted that Northeastern states recorded an average annual GST revenue growth of 27% between 2017 and 2023, surpassing the national average of 14%. In April 2025, Nagaland achieved its second-highest monthly GST collection, contributing to India’s record Rs 2.37 lakh crore.
He said the destination-based tax structure has benefitted consumer states like Nagaland, with up to 70% of revenue now retained by the state, empowering investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Lanu also announced that the National Academy of Customs and Indirect Taxes (NACIN) will soon offer certification training in Shillong to develop certified "GST Mitras" for awareness and employment.

The programme featured the presentation of commendation and appreciation certificates to outstanding officers, technicians, business houses, and professionals for their exemplary service, compliance, and commitment to voluntary tax contribution.

Commendation certificates were awarded to Orenponi Yanthan, Deputy Commissioner of State Taxes; Zulu Temsu, Assistant Commissioner; Langphong Wanmai, Commercial State Taxes Officer; E. Mhabemo Ovung, Assistant Office Superintendent; Lienchungnung, Superintendent CGST; and Lunmilen Sitlhou, Inspector CGST.

Appreciation certificates for technicians were presented to Biju Sarmah, Data Analyst, State Taxes Nagaland, and Zeko Mero, Technical Lead, State Taxes Nagaland.

Appreciation certificates for taxpayers were given to Symbios Creations Pvt. Ltd., Nagaland Decorative House, Zion Hospital Pharmacy, Jesmina Zeliang (M/s Heirloom Naga), Seyie Auto, Medoneizo Putsure, and Bambusa. Rohan Abraham was honoured with an appreciation certificate for Chartered Accountant.

Special Commissioner of State Taxes, Mhathung Murray, in his closing remarks, congratulated the awardees, describing them as examples of timely and ethical tax compliance. He expressed hope that their conduct would inspire broader voluntary compliance across the state.

Short speeches were also delivered by awardees including Rohan Abraham, Jesmina Zeliang, and representatives from Symbios Creations Pvt. Ltd., who shared positive experiences with digital GST compliance.

The event was chaired by Deputy Commissioner of State Taxes (Hq), Tokatoli Sohe, and featured a musical performance by Rajen Deb Nath.
