Dimapur | August 11
Atleast 12 households were forced to vacate their homes after a heavy downpour aggravated a known sinking zone in Mangkolemba town, Mokokchung on August 11. The affected houses were standing in steeply sloping terrain known to have been prone to subsidence.
According to a Mokokchung district official, cracks began to appear in the sinking zone, endangering safety of residents, following a heavy downpour in the early hours of August 10. As many as 8 houses had to be demolished, while 4 others had to be vacated in the town’s Ward 1 locality, the official said.
There were also multiple landslips in one route connecting the town with Mokokchung via Khar village. This route, which was cut by local residents, would likely be cleared only after the Independence Day celebrations conclude, the official said.
Meanwhile, one culvert was washed away by a swollen stream in the Mangkolemba-Longnak road temporarily blocking vehicular traffic. The official informed that a makeshift wooden bridge was built to allow vehicular movement. The neglected Mangkolemba-Longnak road serves as the main thoroughfare for the townsfolk during the monsoon as other link roads become unsafe.
Other reports said that there were also flashfloods in the lower reaches of the town. There was no report of human casualty, however.
