Kisama | November 30 : The Phekmi Welfare Union Kohima (PWUK) will be hosting the Chakhesang Morung at Kisama Heritage Village on the occasion of 2011 Hornbill Festival where the host plans to display the name “Phekmi” which means denizens of ‘Phekrekedzema.’
Phekrekedzema in Tenyidie was officially named as “Phek” by the Britishers, shortening it for their convenience in administrative affairs. Phekrekedzema which is also popularly called ‘Cekredzemi’ in Chokri literally meant ‘people of sentry builders’. In past days, when head hunting was considered as one of the greatest victory in human lives, Phekmi was reportedly maintaining sentry on all four walls of villages, keeping strict vigilant on the entry of its enemies.
History has in record that the Phekmi maintained the sentries all the time and thus the village was named Cekredzemi which means the sentry builders and they did saved their leaders. And because of these brave deeds, today it is believed that Phek village (Cekredzemi) has produced some of the popular Naga leaders viz; FGN President Late. Zasheyi Huire, Dy. C-in-C Naga Army Late. Lt. General PD Soho, Dy. C-in-C Maj. Gen. C. Vero, present FGN C-in-C. S. Dure Chizo and present Health & Family Welfare Minister, government of Nagaland, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu.
As part of recognizing the loyal practice executed by their forefathers’ the PWUK is hosting Chakhesang Morung during 2011 Hornbill Festival and constructing a beautifully designed “Cekre” Sentry platform just outside the Morung.
The Cekre construction leader and also former president Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) Veduvo Rhakho while stating the Cekre as “one of my greatest achievement in live” Rhakho said that ‘30 years long maintenance by forefathers’ which was never put up in practical implementation will be brought back to practice during this historic festival.
Expressing his confidence about the constructed “Cekre” to carry out a meaningful aspect, Rhakho viewed that the 30 years long practice kept in abeyance would indeed add more colour to the festival.
