Mystery surrounded the bone chilling murder of a woman in Dimapur allegedly by her husband, a day after the incident. The victim, in her early 30s, was discovered dead, with the throat slit, in her apartment in Thilixu village, around afternoon on February 9 incident.
Police arrested one suspect, a few hours later, who turned out to be the victim’s husband.
The Dimapur police refused to share details of the case citing it would compromise ongoing investigation. As per the police, the alleged murder occurred around 3:00 pm after which the husband left the apartment. The woman, said to be pregnant, was found dead some two hours later.
Based on the complaint it received, the accused husband was tracked down and arrested late on Sunday night from somewhere in the 4th Mile area.
The motive of the crime remained unclear as the police continued with the investigation.
Unions condemn
In a statement, the Aquba Union, Zunheboto expressed outrage over what it described as a "monstrous offense" and called for strict legal action against the accused. "We resolutely appeal to the higher authorities to penalise the culprit in the most stringent manner under the law, setting an example that such acts will not be tolerated," the statement read. The union termed the incident a harsh reminder of the pervasive issue of domestic violence that plagues the society,"
The Kulolau Aghünato Tokuku Jomi Küqhakulu also condemned the incident, stating that it stands in solidarity with the victims family and loved ones during this difficult time.
NSCW takes cognisance
Meanwhile, the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has taken suo-moto cognisance of the incident. A press release from the NSCW informed that it has written to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, urging to conduct a swift and thorough investigation, ensuring that justice is delivered without delay.
It said, “Such barbaric acts of violence against women are utterly unacceptable and deserve the harshest punishment under the law.” While stating that violence within families undermines the fabric of the society, the Commission said that it stands firm in demanding accountability and justice for the victim and her grieving family.
