Lumami, February 18 (MExN): The inaugural session of the International Conference on Chemistry in Multidisciplinary Research (ICCMR–2026), organised by the Department of Chemistry, Nagaland University, was held on February 18 at I Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, Lumami.
The three-day conference will continue till February 20.
In a message, NU Vice-Chancellor Prof J K Patnaik highlighted the contributions of academic institutions to scientific advancement and outlined initiatives undertaken by the University to promote research and innovation.
VC In-charge Prof B Kilangla Jamir spoke on the gap between science and society, observing that economic growth alone cannot ensure sustainable development.
She called for greater adoption of multidisciplinary approaches and encouraged students to make the most of the platform.
NU Registrar Dr Abemo expressed appreciation to participants and described the conference as an important milestone for the University.
Meanwhile, Prof Dipak Sinha, Pro VC of the Medziphema Campus, noted the evolution of the conference from an interdisciplinary to a multidisciplinary forum and encouraged students to actively engage with delegates.
Prof Santosh K Singh, Dean, School of Science, underscored the importance of multidisciplinary approaches in addressing contemporary challenges such as climate change and poverty.
Guests of Honour Prof Virendra M Tiwari and Prof Mohammad Mobin also addressed the gathering. Prof Tiwari spoke on the relevance of multidisciplinary research in solving global problems, while Prof Mobin highlighted the academic value of the conference and introduced the “Design Your Degree Programme.”
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Prof Dr G D Yadav commended the organisers and spoke on the theme “Think of Some Innovations.”
He suggested reforms such as adopting a trimester system to enhance academic effectiveness and emphasised the importance of supporting girls’ education up to the PhD level.
He also proposed creating dedicated spaces for retired scholars to continue mentoring young researchers.
The Abstract Book was formally released by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries.
Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to distinguished personalities during the inaugural programme, informed a press release from the NU.
The session was chaired by Prof Ambrish Singh, Head of the Department of Chemistry while Dr M Indira Devi presented an overview of the Department. The felicitation ceremony was conducted by Dr Seram Dushila Devi. It concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr I Tovishe Phucho of the Department of Chemistry.
A cultural performance by students was presented earlier in the programme.
