IMD forecasts thunderstorms, rainfall in Nagaland

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted likelihood of “Thunderstorm/lightning/hailstorm” in isolated pockets in several states including Nagaland in the next 48 hours. It also predicted “Fairly widespread/widespread light/moderate rainfall” from January 23 to 25 across the North East region. 

The All India Weather Forecast Bulletin issued by the IMD at 4:30 pm on January 23 informed that “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, hail at isolated places very likely over Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland and with lightning at isolated places over Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh,” on Sunday.

On January 24, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places very likely over Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, it added.

In its weather warning for the next five days, the IMD also predicted dense fog in isolated pockets of several areas including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, as well as cold wave conditions in pockets of Gujarat state.

Shallow to moderate fog likely over parts of East and Northeast India during night/morning hours of January 24 and 25, 2022, it added. 

According to the IMD, the current weather condition in India is due to a Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over Punjab and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels with a trough aloft in mid and upper tropospheric levels roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat. 32°N. 

A cyclonic circulation lies over Haryana and neighbourhood; an east-west trough runs from this cyclonic circulation to north Chhattisgarh and a north-south trough runs from Bihar to north Odisha in lower tropospheric levels, it observed.

It further predicted fall in minimum temperatures by 3-4°C over most parts of Northwest India and Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours and by 2-3°C during subsequent 2 days. 

It also predicted a fall in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C over Maharashtra and Gujarat during next 3 days. While there will be no significant change in minimum temperatures over East India were observed during next 3 days, it predicted a fall by 2-4°C thereafter.

Dense fog conditions very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan during next 2 days and cold day conditions over these areas on 24th January. Cold wave conditions likely in isolated pockets over these areas during January 25 to 27, it added.
