A programme to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disability 2021 on the theme “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-Covid-19 world,” was held at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur on December 3. 

Sub Divisional Officer, Dimapur, Yanthungbemo Kikon, who spoke on behalf of the district administration in his address said, “While we continue to provide, utilize the already existing facilities, it is also imperative to identify better services and avenues for PWDs.” 

He said that at present one can see a lot of improvement in respect of recognition as well as participation of PWDs in different fields, whether it be on global, national or regional platforms. “This itself is a clear indication of how far we have come as an inclusive society,” the SDO said.

Kikon said though the role and participation of PWDs both at social and economic levels have spanned over centuries, but now more than ever as the world strives to rebuild a normal life in the aftermath of the Covid-19, the urgency to recognize and explore the opportunities and challenges faced by PWDs is felt more intensely.

DEO Dimapur, Kisheli Shikhu, spoke on the topic “Inclusive education” vis-à-vis children with special needs (CWSN). Highlighting on IE activities in Dimapur district, the DFO said as per UDISE 2020-21, a total of 379 CWSN were enrolled including 218 boys and 178 girls. The School Education also distributed smartphones, textbooks (Braille) recorded audio lessons besides live phone calls and video online classes for deaf students.

Shikato Zhimo from the Social Welfare Department highlighted on various schemes, both national and state schemes, which PWDs can avail.

The day was marked by presentation of wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids and other equipments to the PWDs from the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre led by Dr Imli Ozukum. Field coordinator, Prodigals’ Home (CMHP), K Sani and Rongsen from Exodus also spoke on the topics ‘CMHP (services and activities)’ and ‘About DPO, concerns and way forward’, respectively. DDLSA panel lawyer, Thius Wangliu, also spoke on the occasion. Earlier, Vikhili Assumi from Samagrah Shiksha, Dimapur, delivered keynote address in Braille script.

The event supported by Azim Premji Foundation was organized by Prodigals’ Home (CMPH) in collaboration with office of the Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, District Disability Rehabilitation Centre, District Education Officer (DEO) and Exodus.
