International Human Rights Council (IHRC), Nagaland Chapter, was officially launched Thursday here at Hotel Saramati, in presence of general secretary, NE-Zonal Board (Public dept), IHRC, Wilson Hasda, and a host of dignitaries, invitees and State IHRC members.
The general secretary, NE-Zonal Board, IHRC, in his address at the inaugural programme underscored the role of youth to bring about positive changes in society, be it human rights or any other issues.
Hasda said the Universal Human Rights Declaration is the world’s most translated document and that the main objective of the declaration is to empower people through awareness of their rights.
Referring to this year’s theme of World Human Rights Day celebration ‘Youth standing up for human rights’, he said human rights is also at the heart of sustainable development goals.
Conveying happiness that the IHRC Nagaland Chapter team has shown eagerness to take up human rights and other so social issues in right earnestness, Hasda exhorted the team members that for any issue or problem, one has to first identify the problem, analyze the problem, make action plan, which should be followed by implementation part and finally, evaluation and review.
Limanochet Jamir, advocate and JRF research scholar, who spoke on the topic ‘Human Rights violations in the context of Nagaland’, in the present Naga society, Nagas have messed up the concept of unity and given it a destructive interpretation. He said if unity is not based on truth and objectivity, then it becomes destructive and not constructive.
Jamir also said Nagas have lost ‘the point of reference’ and subjected to ‘multiplicity of authority’, resulting in chaos and uncertainty in rule of law, be it in legal (customary laws versus legal laws) or different Naga national political groups.
The advocate also said human rights violations are taking place right within the four corners of Naga homes in the form of mistreatment and abuse of domestic helpers. He said society is making these domestic “more invisible” by adopting them and giving them names, which remove them further from their roots.
President (public department), Nagaland State Board IHRC, Akavi N Zhimomi, in his address said the Nagaland Chapter IHRC would be rendering their services inclusive of all communities and tribes in the state. He also said it is time that youths should be given the opportunity to serve in various platforms to bring about positive changes in the society.
On the occasion, Zhimomi also read out the message of national general secretary, IHRC, Kamal Raj Chetri.
Vice president, IHRC Nagaland State Board, Kuhoto I Awomi, chaired the inaugural programme and executive president, IHRC Nagaland State Board, I Chubatangit Jamir, proposed vote of thanks.
