DIMAPUR, APRIL 8 (MExN): The Janata Dal (United) Nagaland State Unit has voiced serious concern over the recent decision by the Government of India to construct fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border and terminate the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
The FMR has long been crucial in facilitating cross-border interactions among communities with shared ethnic, cultural, and familial ties.
The JDU Nagaland Unit expressed regret over the lack of transparency and the absence of meaningful dialogue in the decision-making process. The party highlighted that the top-down approach adopted by the central government undermines the principles of cooperative federalism, creating potential for growing distrust among border communities. The JDU cautioned that neglecting local perspectives could lead to social unrest and negatively impact families and traders who rely on cross-border exchanges.
"This decision directly threatens our shared heritage and identity. Instead of erecting physical barriers, we urge the Central Government to engage in an open and inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders, including Myanmar, to address security concerns while safeguarding the rights and livelihoods of our people," read the press statement from the party.
The JDU suggested exploring alternative solutions, such as regulated movement, advanced monitoring systems, and community-inclusive border management, which could provide more balanced and effective outcomes.
The JDU Nagaland Unit has also called on the State Government to advocate strongly for a reassessment of the decision, urging the central government to engage in collaborative discussions involving Myanmar, state governments, tribal bodies, and civil society organizations to redesign border policies. The party stressed the importance of balancing security needs with the preservation of cultural and economic connections in the region.
The JDU further pointed out that the fencing and termination of the FMR may fail to address the root causes of border issues and may instead exacerbate existing tensions. The party emphasized the need for a cooperative, forward-looking approach that respects the aspirations of border communities and ensures long-term regional stability.
Reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights and unity of the people of Nagaland, the JDU called for collective efforts to persuade the central government to reconsider this divisive policy.
