The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Dimapur Naga Students’ Federation today condemned the ‘incidents’ that took place during the eviction drive by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on January 30, even as they appealed for maintaining peace and tranquility
The two organisations also expressed “anguish and sadness” over what they described as “forceful occupation and forceful nature” which took place during the incidents.
Addressing the media after a visit to the incident site on Monday, the NSF President Kegwayhun Tep stated that the federation delegated the DNSU for spot verification during the course of the eviction drive.
As per reports received, 23 households and many families were displaced while 2 churches and 1 masjid were destroyed during the eviction drive, he said.
In this connection, it appealed churches of Nagaland, particularly those based in Dimapur, to come forward to extend relief to the displaced families, churches and mosque.
Meanwhile, the NSF and DNSU further appealed to the Naga people to “maintain peace and tranquility though we are facing hardship and disharmony in our border belt bordering Dimapur and Assam.”
The NSF had earlier on January 24 written to the KAAC to prevent forceful eviction, but the January 30 incident was beyond “our control,” the federation stated.
The NSF in a letter to the Chief Executive Member (CEM) Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) among others had appealed him to “ensure that the lives, properties and means of livelihood of the Nagas living in the border belt under your jurisdiction is protected through your active intervention.”
The NSF's intervention came after the KAAC authorities reportedly issued an eviction notice for the land situated at Borijan Mauza Lahorijan Block-3, Balijan 'C' Khan Basti.
As per a PTI report, locals clashed with police during an eviction drive near the inter-state border with Nagaland on Sunday. “Security forces fired several rounds in the air and lobbed tear gas shells as locals, protesting the eviction, hurled stones at them,” it said quoting officials.
Meanwhile, the NSF and DNSU team also reportedly met the Karbi Students’ Union over the issue.
An NSF official however informed that no assurance was given during the meeting.
On query regarding its further course of action, the NSF official stated: “We will react as per the environment.”
