DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 10 (MExN): The Tikhir Tsonglaknyi festival was celebrated on October 10, drawing a gathering of dignitaries and local residents.
The celebration commenced with a prayer led by Rev. P. Rangthong, Pastor of the Kiusam Town Baptist Church (KTBC). Organized by the Tsonglak Committee, the event highlighted the cultural significance of Tsonglak, a festival traditionally observed by the menfolk of the Tikhir community.
V. Asuthong, a second GB, addressed attendees, explaining that the term "Tsonglaknyi" combines two words: "Tsong," meaning shield, and "lak," meaning sanctification. He noted that historically, the festival involved the cleansing of weapons and valuable assets, emphasizing its importance in Tikhir culture.
In his speech, Rev. Fr. Thomas Toretkiu reflected on the blessings passed down from ancestors and the ongoing value of purification and sanctification. He highlighted the need for self-introspection and community building, stating, “The discipline and hard work associated with these traditions continue to shape our lives today.”
The festival included donations from dignitaries and community members. Following cultural dance performances, attendees enjoyed a communal meal, and a friendly volleyball match was organized to further enhance the celebratory atmosphere.
