Nongoto Lcho and Nowhevito Nagi from Model Hr Sec School, Kohima with their exhibition on a Mathematical Model of Cancer for Sustainable Development won the first position in the team category at the Kohima District Level Science Exhibition 2019 held on October 30.
Niketo Tuccu, and Ifkali Yepthomi from St. Mary’s Hr Sec School, Kohima won the second position.
In the individual category, the first and second positions were won by Lemei, Class-12, Model Hr Sec School, Kohima and Kekhriesino Meyase, Class- 9, Mezhür Hr Sec School, Kohima respectively.
The Kohima District Level Science Exhibition 2019 was held at St. Mary's Cathedral Higher Secondary School, Kohima. Under the theme 'Science and Technology for sustainable development', 27 students from various Schools in Kohima participated in the Science exhibition. Rovilatuo Mor, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Works & Housing, Government of Nagaland was the special guest during the Exhibition.
"Science and Technology, in the 21st Century have come to stay. It has been, and going to dominate our lives- our health, environment, lifestyle, communication, economy etc,” said special guest Rovilatuo Mor during the inauguration. Mor stated that Science and Technology is a matter that needs more focus and emphasis in the present day so that 'it is used to adopt and exploit the best resources to improve our lives for a better future and a better world'. The concept and study of Science must be used for the greater good of humanity, according to the IAS.
“Science should not be taken as a subject just for the sake of learning, discovery and experimentation but the greater meaning should be to sustain and to give improvement to our lives, to our generation and the generation to come,” stressed Mor who encouraged the students to keep practising and exploring beyond what has been discovered or learned. The need to constantly upgrade one's knowledge and discovery was also emphasized.
"Science should not only be studied for the sake of academic degrees, but it should be a way of life," noted Mor. While Science and technology is essential for humans, Mor also warned the students to be aware and mindful of the destructive side of technology. "Overindulgence can cause harm. We are also constantly under the danger of damaging ourselves through science and technology," remarked Mor.
Participating students presented innovative exhibitions based on the theme. The various scientific exhibitions included sewage treatment plant, sustainable agricultural practices, mathematical model of cancer for sustainable development, future transport and communication, low-cost handmade manure, rooftop rainwater harvesting.
Moderator Kepelhouzo Terhüja, Sr. Sub Divisional Education Officer, Kohima informed that the winners will represent Nagaland in the Eastern Indian Science Fair at Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, Kolkata from January 14 to 18, 2020.
