Marking World Red Cross Day, the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch today undertook a walkathon under the theme “Walk for Humanity” from Red Cross Complex to Old NST, Kohima. Politicians, senior citizens, business community, NGOs, academicians and Red Cross members joined the event.

Kohima Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem, who is also the President of IRCS Kohima Branch flagged off the event at Red Cross Complex.

Addressing the culmination service at Old NST, MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso highlighted the significance of humanity and compassion in today’s conflict-ridden world. Recalling the life and humanitarian work of Henry Dunant, he said the founder of the Red Cross was inspired to begin humanitarian service after witnessing thousands of wounded soldiers abandoned during the Battle of Solferino in 1859. He noted that Dunant, though not a medical professional, mobilised villagers to help the injured irrespective of which side they belonged to.

Rhutso stressed that humanity transcends religion, race, and social barriers, adding that every individual has the responsibility to take a step forward in helping others. He encouraged students and youngsters to begin practising humanity through simple acts of kindness in daily life, such as sharing school supplies with classmates in need or being honest and compassionate in one’s profession and dealings with others.

Stating that problems in society are created by human beings and can only be solved by human beings, he asserted that lasting solutions are possible only through humanity.

He urged participants not to let the “Walk for Humanity” end with the programme, but to carry its message into their homes, communities, and society at large.

He expressed hope that the walkathon would inspire people to come forward in helping those in need and continue nurturing compassion and humanitarian values in society.

‘Renew our pledge to serve humanity with dignity’
IRCSN general secretary Akhale Khamo conveyed the message of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Secretary General Lalit Wadhwa.

The Indian Red Cross Society has continued to stand beside communities affected by disasters, emergencies, and humanitarian challenges.

This year’s theme, “United in Humanity,” reminded that compassion, solidarity, and service to those in need transcend all boundaries.

“Our collective strength lies in our unity, our volunteer network, and our unwavering commitment to humanity. In a world facing increasing humanitarian needs, let us continue to work together with compassion, neutrality, and integrity,” Wadhwa stated.

Wadhwa also urged everyone to come forward and “renew our pledge to serve humanity with dignity, empathy, and unity.”

The occasion featured warm-up sessions conducted by the Nagaland Body Building & Fitness Association and a prayer by NBCC social concern secretary Dr. Villo Naleo.

The programme was chaired by Khyochano TCK while vote of thanks was proposed by IRCSN vice chairman Dr R Rose.

Among others, the event was supported by Kohima Village Youth Organization, Nagaland Body Building & Fitness Association, Kripa Foundation, Voluntary Blood Donor Association Nagaland, Nagaland Senior Citizen Association, Pele Khezhie, Decibel System, Seyie Auto, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority and Olive Spring  and joined by students from Mount Olive College Kohima, GPS Lower PR Hill, Public School Dziiviirii Kohima, G. Rio School and GHS Midland.

‘Walkathon is a symbol of solidarity, compassion’
Nagaland’s health & family welfare minister P. Paiwang Konyak described Walkathon as more than just a physical activity.

“It is a powerful symbol of solidarity, compassion, and our shared responsibility towards one another. In a world often divided by differences, this initiative reminds us that humanity comes first, no matter our background, beliefs, or circumstances, we are united,” the minister stated in his message on the occasion of World Red Cross Day.

The minister lauded Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland state branch for always being at the forefront of humanitarian service- responding to disasters, supporting the vulnerable, and promoting health and dignity.

This walkathon carries forward that legacy, encouraging each one of us to take a step, not just on the road but towards kindness, empathy, and service, Paiwang stated.

“Let this walk be a reminder that when we are united for humanity, there is no challenge too great, and no cause too small,” the minister stated.
