Konyak women have danced their way to the prestigious Guinness World Records (GWR) for the title of ‘Largest Traditional Konyak Dance,’ the result of which was declared late April 9.

4,687 women danced in Konyak traditional attire for 5 minutes and 2 seconds during the Aoleang Monyu Mini Hornbill Festival on April 5.

B Lomei Konyak, President of the KNSK (Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong), expressed happiness at the feat. “It is God’s grace and totally unexpected!” she exclaimed while speaking to The Morung Express.

More than 100 villages from Mon district bonded to make this happen. A wonderful opportunity for the Konyak womenfolk at such short notice, Lomei said, it would, however, not have been possible without the men.

Konyak Union took up a major role in mobilizing youth from Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), Mon Town Students’ Union (MTSU) and also set up a GWR Committee comprising of GBs and Ward Presidents, explained the KNSK President.

With cooperation from men to combine forces of all the 11 wards of Mon Town, success was achieved, she said.

After a response from the GWR officials on March 5, Lomei revealed, they were a little apprehensive. 4,950 women came together on the morning of April 5 to take part in the largest traditional Konyak dance ever. However, due to technical errors in bar codes, on bands to be worn around the wrist, during the morning of the event, 263 women could not be registered.
Transport, food and lodging were funded by households in Mon Town.

Meanwhile, the Konyak Union in a press release from its President, Manlip Konyak, thanked all the participants, organizers and well wishers for their contribution and support in accomplishing this great achievement.
