KSU reminds Nagaland CM on ‘review and reform’ of reservation policy

Mon, August 27 (MExN): The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), in a reminder, has urged Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio to “undertake an immediate review and restructuring of the existing job reservation policy.”

In a representation to the CM, the KSU also called for introducing a “population-based reservation system” through a special Cabinet decision without waiting for the 2021 Census.

The Union highlighted that it had earlier raised the issue via another representation on June 13, 2025, which, among other points, stressed that the Konyak tribe, constituting one of the largest tribal populations in Nagaland, continues to face systemic marginalisation under the current job reservation framework.

“The disparity in employment opportunities, coupled with the lowest literacy rate, the highest rate of educated unemployment, and poor socio-economic indicators in Mon district, calls for urgent redressal,” it added.

However, the KSU noted that no concrete step or official communication has been received, prompting the submission of the new representation.

“This is not just an appeal for policy reform, but a desperate cry for justice, equity, and recognition of our rightful share,” it asserted.

The delay in addressing this genuine demand has intensified the frustration and disillusionment among educated Konyak youths, which, if left unattended, may lead to undesirable social consequences, it added.

The KSU expressed hope that, under the CM’s leadership, the State Government will deliver justice and ensure equitable opportunities for all sections of Naga society.
