Kuda Village Council imposes one-time waste management fee to develop new dumping site

Dimapur, June 12 (MExN): The Kuda Village Council (KVC) has approved a one-time waste management fee for households and establishments within its jurisdiction to finance the development of a new community-funded dumping site following the recent ban imposed by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on waste disposal by colonies and villages outside its jurisdiction.

In a statement issued on June 12, the council said the decision was taken during its meeting held on June 10 after deliberating on the growing challenges of waste management and disposal.

It said the village had been severely affected by the DMC's ban and had recently purchased a dumping site located around 25 km away using community funds without any government assistance.

The council said work is underway to develop the site and make it operational at the earliest to ensure proper waste disposal and maintain cleanliness within the village.

Noting that several parts of Dimapur have recently witnessed heaps of garbage and unhygienic conditions, the council said its objective is to keep Kuda village clean through active community participation and improved waste management.

To meet the urgent expenditure required for developing the site, the council approved the collection of one-time fees from registered tax-paying households, commercial establishments and settlers disposing of waste within the village jurisdiction for 2026 and 2027.

The funds will be utilised for constructing an approach road, perimeter fencing, transportation of waste, creation of space for dumper trucks, electricity connectivity and provision of water supply and living quarters for a caretaker, among other essential infrastructure.

Under the approved fee structure, registered households will pay Rs 2,000 each, in addition to voluntary donations. Schools and nursery establishments will be charged Rs 4,000, with slabs applicable for larger and smaller institutions, while churches will pay Rs 3,000.

A fee of Rs 500 per kitchen has been fixed for the floating population and rental category, while charges for daily, monthly and petty waste disposal groups will be determined by the Kuda Waste Management Committee.

The council appealed to residents and stakeholders to cooperate with the initiative and comply with the new fee structure to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for the village.
