DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 15 (MExN): KVK Phek, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema celebrated Kisan Mela under Jal Shakti Abhiyan on November 15 at KVK Phek premises, Porba. The welcome address and brief introduction and concept of Jal Shakti Abhiyan was delivered by Dr. T. Esther Longkumer, Senior Scientist & Head I/c.
Rontilo Kent, District Soil & Water Conservation Officer, Phek spoke on the activities undertaken by the department viz contour trenching, bench terracing, dug out ponds for ground water recharge and to check the velocity of water.
Deputy District Agriculture Officer Phek, Lisutho Phoji, elaborated on the importance of maintaining the water table through log bunding which prevents soil erosion and enhances the retention of water flow.
Dr Imsunaro Jamir, District Development Manager, NABARD Phek, explained that we cannot stop climate change but mitigation should be done. She shared success stories on spring based watershed in Kiphire and Phek district sponsored under NABARD initiatives.
Dr M H Khan, Principal Scientist, ICAR-NRCM, Medziphema spoke on the importance of basic requirements of survival i.e food, air and water. He spoke on the objectives and schemes under Jal Shakti Ministry.
Deo Nukhu, ex-MLA, Guest of honour, emphasized on the Jal Shakti Abhiyan theme- ‘Catch the rain, where it falls,’ and encouraged the farmers to conserve water which is an essential element in day to day lives. He also urged the participants to take the opportunities in various agri and allied fields from the KVK.
An interaction programme and exhibition of farmer’s friendly technologies was conducted and displayed during the event. The programme was chaired by Hannah K Asangla, ACTO-Agronomy and concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Er Nukusa T Vadeo, TO (Computer). Altogether 154 farmers and concerned government officials participated in the event.
