DIMAPUR, JULY 7 (MExN): Relentless monsoon rains have triggered landslides, flash floods, and infrastructure failures across Nagaland, paralyzing mobility and prompting emergency response efforts from district and state authorities.

According to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), widespread damages have been reported to houses, roads, bridges, retaining walls, and agricultural fields. Several districts are facing simultaneous crises due to inundation and land erosion.

Dimapur flood crisis deepens
In Dimapur, heavy rainfall beginning the evening of July 5 led to flash floods across multiple low-lying areas. Overflowing drains caused severe waterlogging in several colonies including Vilhume, Netaji, Kalibari (Ward-17), Namgalong, Kuda Village, Purana Bazar 'B', Walford (Central), Mount View Colony, Aoyimti, Police Colony, Ekhyoyan Village, and Phom Colony. Many of these were not affected in the earlier wave of flooding, pointing to an escalation in the situation.

An emergency meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was convened on July 7 at noon to assess the crisis. The administration resolved to extend immediate relief, visit affected relief camps, and submit a comprehensive report to the Government along with proposals for long-term flood mitigation.

Rescue operations by the SDRF began at 5:50 AM on July 6, focusing on the most affected pockets. A team of 25 personnel, including trained divers, used a rescue boat to evacuate residents trapped in flooded homes and streets. By the morning of July 7, a total of 844 individuals, including children, elderly, sick, a special child, and an infant, were rescued and relocated to three relief camps set up at BSNL Quarters in Walford, S.M. Colony, and Namgalong Colony.

Tragically, three lives were lost due to electrocution—two in Kuda Village and one in Police Colony. The SDRF and DDMA teams continue to monitor the situation and assist affected residents.

Chümou, Niuland, Wokha hit
Flooding was also reported in Chümoukedima district, affecting Tenyiphe, Chekiye, Ward 10 (near DC Office), Virazouma, Neiphrolie, Singrijan, Khopanala, Sovima, Thilixu, Naga United Village, and the 173rd CRPF Camp near the airport. Infrastructure damage has been reported across several locations in the district.

Niuland district witnessed flooding in at least a dozen villages including Kuhuboto, New Showuba, Nizhevi, Lotovi, Suhoi, Nihokhu, Hovishe, Ghokuto, Toshiho, Khehoyi, and Anato, prompting the need for close monitoring.

In Wokha district, flash floods in Chanka village have destroyed large tracts of paddy fields. Similar losses to paddy and jhum cultivation have been reported from other districts, according to preliminary damage assessments by NSDMA.

Landslides sever district road links
In Longleng district, a landslide on July 4 at Yongam village severed the road link between Longleng and Mon districts. Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom, who inspected the site, has urged residents to avoid the route while restoration efforts are underway.

Tuensang district is facing major connectivity issues after NH-202 was cut off near Chare Town due to mudslides and road subsidence. The road to Mokokchung from Chare is also blocked in multiple locations. A Bailey bridge on the same route is reportedly on the verge of collapse due to strong river currents. DDMA teams are assisting stranded passengers.

Kohima and Mokokchung face structural damages
In Kohima, a retaining wall collapsed below the Civil Secretariat, damaging two vehicles and blocking access to several offices. Flooding in urban areas has also been reported.

In Mokokchung, landslides in Changki village damaged the main road and disrupted the water pipeline. Another landslide occurred in Longkong village, further affecting rural transport and supply lines.

Drainage Encroachment
The East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC) earlier issued a statement raising concern over encroachment along the sugar mill nalla between Purana Bazar and Purana Bazar B, which has blocked the natural flow of drainage water. EDTC warned that this has worsened flooding across Airport Area, Padumpukhuri, and surrounding localities, damaging homes and farmland.

District Disaster Management Authorities, SDRF, and local administrations remain on high alert. Relief distribution, evacuation, and infrastructure assessments are ongoing across affected zones.

The NSDMA has urged citizens to avoid vulnerable areas, stay updated with local advisories, and cooperate with emergency services. A detailed report on the damage and rehabilitation needs is being compiled for submission to the Government.
