Lecture on Naga Indigenous Democracy held at St Joseph’s College, Jakhama

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 19 (MExN): The Naga Scholars’ Association (NSA), Kohima Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, organised its Lecture Series–2 on the theme “Naga Indigenous Democracy” with Dr Mhonthung Yanthan as the resource person.

The programme was chaired by Seyiekhrienuo Lhoungu, with an invocation by Rev Fr Vipral Jhon. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Aosunep, President of NSA (Kohima Unit).

Speaking on the sub-theme “Relooking Naga Traditional Values: A Stronghold of Tradition”, Dr Yanthan underscored the enduring significance of traditional values in shaping Naga society. He said values function as the moral compass of communities, influencing how people live, interact and sustain themselves.

He outlined seven core Naga traditional values: communitarian spirit, truth and honesty, courage and resilience, hospitality and generosity, respect for nature, respect for elders, and kinship and harmony. These, he noted, are not abstract ideas but lived realities transmitted through oral traditions, folklore, customary laws and rituals.

“Naga traditional values are not relics of the past,” Dr Yanthan said, adding that they remain vital for guiding social life and inspiring younger generations to remain rooted while navigating modernity. “In times of change, identity, solidarity, and respect for truth, nature and community remain the strongest anchors of society,” he stressed.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Lanukumal, General Secretary of NSA (Kohima Unit).
