Master plans for 10 district headquarters in Nagaland

The state’s urban development department has so far prepared Masters Plans for 10 district headquarters. However, in view of the changing urban scenario caused by rapid expansion of urban areas in the state, most of these Master Plans have become outdated. The department has therefore initiated for revision of some of these master plans in a phased manner. This was stated in the annual administrative report of urban development department tabled in the recently concluded assembly session here by urban development minister Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu.

The ongoing master plan projects included; “Draft Kohima Master Plan 2030.’ The report said with the rapid expansion of the capital town during the past two decades, development activities have been expanded well beyond the notified areas of the town and have had an impact on the surrounding areas and villages as well. With an objective of providing a planned and balanced framework for the inevitable process of urbanization beyond the municipal limits of Kohima town, the department has taken up preparation of ‘Draft Kohima Master Plan 2030” which is envisaged to cover an extended area including the peripheral areas of some surrounding villages.

Master Plan of model township at new district headquarter, Peren- With the creation of the new district at Peren, government had initiated for development of a model township at the new district headquarter, which is envisaged to be the first planned township in the state.

To this end, the report said, the government had successfully acquired 3715 areas of land.

The availability of adequate land for the model township shall ensure better implementation of the master plan, the report said. The department was entrusted with the responsibility of facilitating and monitoring various development activities. Accordingly, a draft master plan for the model township was prepared, which is currently in the process of submission for approval of government. The master plan of the model township is for a period of 20 years of a population of 25,000 persons. The new township is envisaged to be a modern planned township, having all basic amenities and services. Detailed “Pocket Survey” work is currently in progress, based on which detailed “Local Area Plans” of identified pockets are also being prepared for residential, institutional, recreation zones.
