The Mokokchung District GBs Association (MDGBA) held its general meeting at the MDGBA Hall in Sangtemla Ward, Mokokchung on February 27.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Vitolu, EAC Mokokchung highlighted the historical significance of the Gaon Bura (GB) institution, noting that it was the first administrative system established by the British in the Naga Hills, even before formal governance structures were in place. He emphasised the vital responsibilities entrusted to GBs, which included revenue collection, judiciary powers, executive functions, and maintaining order in rural areas in the absence of a police force.

Vitolu further urged the GBs to play an active role in the selection of village councils, ensuring inclusivity and integrity. Expressing concerns over the issuance of Indigenous Inhabitant Certificates and Permanent Residential Certificates, he cautioned that any lapses in approval could lead to outsiders taking undue advantage of indigenous rights.

Marsanen Imsong, President of Ao Senden, also addressed the gathering, acknowledging the selfless service of GBs, who remain the only government-appointed officials without a salary. He stated that the institution of GBs did not exist under the traditional Putu Menden system and was introduced by the British as a means of ensuring governance aligned with local customs and traditions.

Reflecting on the historical role of GBs in the Naga political movement of the 1970s and 80s, Marsanen urged them to continue advocating for a lasting Naga political solution, especially in light of the Framework Agreement and Agreed Position. He also emphasized the importance of preserving the Ao language, expressing concern that younger generations were losing touch with their 'sobaliba'  and calling upon GBs to take an active role in safeguarding cultural heritage.

The event commenced with a welcome address by MDGBA President Along Jamir. The meeting also saw the selection of new office bearers for the 2025-2030 tenure with President: Along Jamir (Tongdentsuyong Ward, Mokokchung) Re-elected; Vice President: Imtisanen (Chuchuyimpang); General Secretary: Imlitemsu (Penli Ward) Re-elected; Assistant General Secretary: Temsutoshi (Changtongya Town) Re-elected; Finance Secretary: Temjennungba (Yimyu Ward) Re-elected; Treasurer: Tsuktimongba (Tongdentsuyong Ward, Mokokchung) Re-elected.
