Mon: broken bridges, missing DCs and walking students

Dimapur June 9 (MExN): A gradual increase in the prices of essential commodities as well as a relative effect on scarcity of necessary goods in Mon, have been reported, courtesy damage and reported severance of vital bridges connecting the town to the rest of Nagaland.

According to latest information from Mon, the connecting bridges each over Tizit River and Takang River have been damaged and even supposed to be severed for quite some time now. The bridges are said to be constructed of wooden planks “built during the India-independence days”. It was also informed that neither the PWD nor the GREF is maintaining the rickety bridges.

The bridges have struggled to exist thus far only on occasional “patching up” with wooden planks, leaving it vulnerable to severance every now and then.

The problem remains vulnerable to deterioration even more with the onset of the monsoon season. According to the KNSK, a Konyak organization, an NGO team of the district would be visiting the affected sites to assess the situation and put forward recommendations to the Government of Nagaland.

In a related case, Wangkhao College, Mon, remains closed for many days since the college bus has stopped plying which, it was reported, is due to the non-availability of petrol and diesel in the fuel pump. It was informed that only a handful of students and the college-peon, obviously having walked all the way, are seen about the college with no faculty staffers in sight.

It may be mentioned that the college is located on the outskirts, about 5 to 6 kilometers away from Mon.

The inability of the people to address the likened situations has also been augmented by the absence of a Deputy Commissioner or an Additional Deputy Commissioner. The DC retired last month and has not been relieved yet while the ADC was transferred few months ago and is still yet to be replaced as well.
