After the turn of events breaking out in a matter of days, where several members of the National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland State tendered their resignation, citing lack of political consultations, and acting contrary to the party constitution by their State President, several more individuals from the party have come forward to do the same on July 1.

Addressing a press conference at Emerald Inn, Dimapur on Friday afternoon, Tohovi Achumi, State General Secretary, IPR and Media, Yashila Ao, State President, Women Wing and Ruth Pochury, State Working President, Women Wing stated that they have tendered their resignations through a resignation letter issued to the party’s top echelons, Thomas Sangma, Nation General Secretary, Organisation, James Sangma, National General Secretary, Nagaland-in-charge and Andrew Ahoto, State President.

The letter states that, “We the following state officials tender our resignation from various posts as well as from both primary and active membership of the NPP with immediate effect.”

“With the present prevailing situation in the party as it has become impossible to continue under the leadership of Dr Andrew Ahoto Sema, President, Nagaland,” they cited as the basis for their actions. “The reason why we are resigning is because of his autocratic style of running a political party which is not acceptable,” Achumi remarked. “He (state party president) does not consult anyone on any appointments, expulsions, plans nor on matters of party functioning. A political organisation is not a proprietorship. When there is no proper growth and guidance within the organisation, the members of the said organisation have to rethink what they have to do. This is exactly what had happened to us,” Achumi stated.

He further refuted the claim of the State President’s comment that “the handful of members do not even comprise 2% of the total party strength,” as completely absurd and a total lie.

Justifying his rebuttal, Achumi explained that when one looks at the state political map of the party, it comprises of Tuensang, Mokokchung, Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, Phek, Wokha and Dimapur. “Out of these districts, party leaders from Mon Tuensang, Mokokchung and Kiphire have resigned with all their rank and file,” he asserted.

In the remaining three districts of Dimapur, Phek and Wokha, he noted that the Dimapur district President had already resigned last year. While for Wokha district, the party operates only from Longsa village with most of the office bearers being from that said village. In the case of Phek district, the party operates from only from Pfütsero.

Therefore, the claim of only 2% resigning does not arise; he said. In fact, Achumi purported that the NPP state party only has about 8-10% remaining within the party as of now.

“Ultimately this is the end of our political career with the NPP and we have moved on,” he professed. Meanwhile the three party members have not disclosed what their future plans were but maintained that they will reveal it in due course of time.
