Dimapur, July 23 (MExN): The Naga Women Hoho of Dimapur today said it stands by its resolution, taken on June 3, to ‘to combat such social evil practice in our society.’ Conversely, the ‘hoho’ also clarified on its reported diktat imposing a “dress code” for women in Dimapur,
While assuring to fight crime against women and the girl child, the ‘hoho’ has allayed fears by assuring that it had never stipulated any specific “dress code” nor did it associate ‘indecent dressing’ with attracting sexual crimes against women.
Denying making any statements about rape or sexual crimes being linked with “indecent dressing,” the ‘hoho’ said the “word” expressed in its resolution “decently” and “indecent” dressing “is not pertaining to any specific dress codes.” The organization issued a statement today clarifying on the issue that, earlier, attracted both ridicule and disbelief alike from citizens and observers.
The Naga Women Hoho and its constituent units have reaffirmed to stand by its resolution passed on June 3, 2011. “That the resolution was passed in view of the alarming growth of violence against women in our state and after prolonged deliberation on the issue of sexual offence and murder committed against the women and girl child, the house felt the need of NWHD’s role to combat such social evil practice in our society,” the hoho stated in the note. President Hukheli T Wotsa and general secretary Liangsi Niumai John appended the note.
“Perceiving the increasing female targeted violence not only within our state but globally, such serious crimes committed against women have aspired NWHD to give its best effort at its own level and appeal once again to the civil society to support, cooperate and give prior concern for the safety of all the women in our society,” the organization stated.
The organization referred to the “indecent dressing” issue “on account of the much debated resolution passed by the constituent body of NWHD, indeed it is a well known fact that the rapist will rape anybody whether you dress decently or indecently.”
“As such it may be noted that in our resolution we have never stated that rape is connected or linked with indecent dressing. NWHD has not stated or named any specific dress code. The word expressed in our resolution ‘decently’ and ‘indecent’ dress is not pertaining to any specific dress codes. The word meaning of ‘decently’ and ‘indecent’ is clearly given in the dictionary and we are guided by the definition,” the ‘hoho’ stated.
The Naga Women Hoho is committed to “the objective of the resolution” and reaffirms to stand by its resolution of June 3, 2011. “The NWHD meets periodically to update needful adjustments actions and we pledge to honor the roots of tribal units in all our reviews,” it added.
