Nagaland collected Goods and Services Tax (GST) amounting to Rs 122 crore in April 2025, the highest ever for the state in any month since the implementation of the tax regime in July 2017.
The April 2025 collection also marked the highest monthly GST revenue recorded to date in the state. Compared to April 2024, when the collection stood at Rs 86 crore, this represents a significant increase of 41.8%.
To put this in perspective, Nagaland’s total GST collection during the first year of implementation (2017-18) was just Rs 104 crore. Since then, both overall and monthly collections have followed a generally upward trend.
Focusing specifically on April collections over the years, data from the GST portal (https://www.gst.gov.in/) shows that revenue stood at Rs 19 crore in April 2018, nearly doubling to Rs 29 crore in April 2019. However, there was a dip to Rs 14 crore in April 2020, likely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy.
A strong recovery followed after the pandemic-induced dip in 2020, with GST collections in April 2021 jumping nearly fourfold to Rs 51.60 crore from just Rs 14 crore the previous year. This upward momentum continued with Rs 68 crore collected in April 2022 and Rs 88 crore in 2023. Although there was a marginal dip to Rs 86 crore in April 2024, revenue surged to Rs 122 crore in April 2025—the highest monthly collection recorded so far.
For the full financial year 2024-25, Nagaland's GST revenue totalled Rs 682 crore, comprising Rs 238 crore in Central GST (CGST), Rs 296 crore in State GST (SGST), Rs 124 crore in Integrated GST (IGST), and Rs 24 crore as compensation cess.
As of April 2025, the taxpayer base in Nagaland stood at 11,019 - 4,432 under the Central GST authorities and 6,587 under the State GST authorities.
According to a press release from the Central GST Dimapur Commissionerate, the taxpayer base has increased significantly over the eight years since the introduction of GST and now stands at approximately 12,000.
Meanwhile, the All India GST collection reached an all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April 2025, reflecting a 12.6% year-over-year increase. This figure represents the highest national collection since the tax regime’s launch in July 2017.
The CGST Dimapur noted that while GST has been a transformative reform in indirect taxation, “as with any reform of this magnitude, it is still evolving.”
To this end, the Commissionerate invited stakeholders to visit its GST Help Desk or Seva Kendra for any GST-related queries.
The GST taxpayers' money plays a pivotal role in nation-building, security, and economic growth. Revenue collected through GST strengthens the government's financial capacity to fund critical infrastructure projects and support social welfare programmes, it maintained.
The tax paid as GST bolsters national security by enabling investments in defense, law enforcement, and disaster management, ensuring a safe and stable environment, it added.
The Commissionerate also urged citizens and stakeholders to work collectively to harness GST’s full potential and contribute to building a transparent and thriving economy.
