After a day-long enforcement, the Karbi Students Association (KSA) informed that it has temporarily suspended its indefinite economic blockade against Nagaland.

The decision was reportedly taken on Tuesday evening following a meeting between the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Commissioner of Police (CP) of Dimapur and other officials along with DC Diphu and his officials.

The meeting was conducted after a joint spot visit by the officials, as per sources. Following the visit, a meeting was held between the two sides where they deliberated on the border demarcation of the Doldoli reserve forest.

Official sources informed The Morung Express that during the meeting, while the Diphu officials claimed that the boundary of Doldoli reserve forest and the said spot is reserve forest area, the Dimapur side maintained that the boundary as per British map is not accepted by Nagaland and the case is sub judice in the Supreme Court.

The Dimapur authorities further added that the spot where the activity is being objected to is within the mutually accepted settlement area of Nagaland.

With the said activity already halted and discussion ongoing between both parties, the DC Dimapur reportedly requested his Diphu counterpart to disallow the economic blockade since the issue is being discussed at the official level.

The Diphu DC had conveyed that he would discuss with the stakeholders for doing the needful.

Following this report, the KSA confirmed to this newspaper that the blockade had been temporarily called off.

However, the KSA added that a second meeting has been scheduled between the DCs of Dimapur and Diphu on November 18, in which the Association expects its demands to be fulfilled.

The decision to resume or call off the blockade would depend on the outcome of the meeting, the KSA official said.

No untoward incident

The economic blockade against Nagaland called by the Karbi Students Association (KSA) which commenced on November 17 was ‘peaceful’, according to updates from the KSA.

The Publicity Secretary of the KSA informed The Morung Express on Tuesday that no untoward incident was reported on the first day of the indefinite economic blockade.

While vehicles carrying essential items were stranded due to the blockade, normal movement of private vehicles remained unaffected.

The blockade was enforced in four locations, namely Silonijan, Hanjanglangso( Surihajan), Dillai police point and Manja.

It was imposed by the KSA in protest against ‘unabated illegal encroachment’ of the Doldoli Reserve Forest by some ‘Naga miscreants’. It has demanded the Assam and Nagaland governments to resolve the boundary issue and establish proper demarcation to avoid conflicts in the future.

According to the KSA, the blockade is being supported by the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Students youth council (SYC), Karbi Students youth council (KSYC), Hill progressive Youth Association (HPYA) and All India students Association (AISA) among others.
