Dimapur, June 25 (MExN): On the occasion of ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ on June 26, the Nagaland State Excise under the aegis of UNDCP and NCB appealed the people of the State and all the organizations, NGOs working in the related field to put a concerted effort to eradicate the dreaded drug menace from the society.

It also urged the public to affirm not to harbour any drug traffickers/peddlers in any form directly or indirectly, but to report any incident of commission of offence under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 taking place or likely to place, immediately to the Excise department.

The Nagaland State Excise department, responsible for supply reduction of drugs, is keeping strict vigil round the clock to check illegal trafficking of drugs in the State with all its available resources, it stated.

It further notified the public about the consequences of illegal dealings in drugs as follows:

•    Illegal dealing in drugs, in any form, sale, possession, transaction, transportation, export, import inside India or from outside is prohibited and punishable under theNDPS Act 1985, with punishment ranging from 10 to 20 yrs imprisonment and with fine from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh or with both.

•    Allowing premises, warehouse, godown, vehicles, or use of any kind of conveyance will be liable for confiscation to the State under NDPS Act with punishment ranging from 10 to 20 years imprisonment and with fine from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakhs or with both.

•    Concealing of narcotic drugs in any form by goods, things or any items will be liable for confiscation to the State with punishment ranging from 10 to 20 years imprisonment and with fine from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh or with both.

•    NDPS Act also prescribes stringent punishment to the extent of ‘death penalty’ for repeated offences committed either in India or abroad.

•    Any property, assets, movable or immovable bank accounts/bank balances acquired or derived from drug money by either spouse, family members/associates, friends are liable for attachment to the State and ‘Freezed’ Bank Accounts/Bank Balances under NDPS Act.
