Persons with Disabilities receive aids and appliances in Dimapur

Altogether, 244 Persons with Disabilities (PWD) received aids and appliances on January 29 at District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) during a distribution camp. The camp was organized by National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata in collaboration with District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC), DHD and Prodigals’ Home Dimapur.
Dr Imlitemsu Ozukum, MD (PMR), SMO and incharge of DDRC, DHD informed that out of the 244 persons, 88 of them were identified under Locomotor Disabilities and received tricycles, wheelchairs, axillary crutch, walking stick, artificial limb etc while 98 persons received hearing aids.
A total of 13 visually impaired persons received blind sticks, smart cane etc. Seven persons were categorized under intellectual disability while 37 persons were categorized under cerebral palsy and one person with multiple disability. All of them received different aids and appliances as per their disability.
Minister for Health & Family welfare, Pangnyu Phom who graced the occasion as the special guest said that the state government was all out to support PWDs and urged all the line departments to see that the Rights of Persons With Disability Act, 2016 is implemented in letter and spirit. He also appealed the departments and NILD Kolkata to also reach out to the interior parts of the state so that the benefits reach all deserving persons.
Meanwhile, the Minister also appealed the beneficiaries not to misuse the aids and appliances stating that there have instances when the beneficiaries sell the appliances instead of using it.
Guest of Honour, Diethono Nakhro, State Commissioner for PWD said that the state was still in poor position when it comes to disability affairs but added that a lot of positive changes have taken place during the current government.
She said there was a misconception that dealing with PWD was the sole responsibility of the Social Welfare
Department. She said that the subject touches all the departments and appealed for coordinated effort to treat PWD as equal citizens of the state.
Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, Anoop Khinchi; District Welfare Officer Dimapur, Hutoi Sema and official from NILD Kolkata also spoke briefly during the programme.
