Girls solidified dominance in the Nagaland Board of School Education’s (NBSE) Board exams, outperforming the boys in most categories as per the latest annual results.
The NBSE, on May 31, declared the results for High School Leaving Certificate Examinations (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examinations (HSSLC) held from March 8-31 this year.
A total of 28,938 candidates were enrolled for HSLC while 17,121 were registered to sit for the HSSLC examination, the Board informed.
Lowest HSLC past percentage in 7 years
According to the NBSE overview, out of 8,938 candidates, a total of 18,721 candidates qualified the examination with a qualified percentage of 64.69%.
The percentage is the lowest in past seven years. In the past decade, pass percentage was lowest in 2013 when 63.53% cleared the Class 10 exam, followed by 64.05% in 2015.
The 2022 performance was third lowest in last 10 years, while it was highest in 2017 at 70.19%.
Both Government and Private schools witnessed fall in pass percentage, resulting in the overall decline.
The pass percentage of students in private schools fell from 85.58% in 2021 to 82.08% in 2022. Likewise, the percentage of qualified students in Government schools decline 44.86% in 2021 to 36.62% in 2022, the lowest in past five years.
A total of 90 schools secured 100% qualified/pass percentage in the HSLC exam; out of which 78 were private schools and 12 are government schools.
On the other end, 33 Government schools and 1 private school had “zero/nil result.”
For the HSLC, Delphi Oinam of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (HSS), Dimapur secured the top position with pass percentage of 99.17%; followed by Rhea Khemani of Holy Cross HSS, Dimapur (98.83%) and Vitshunuo Alvina Dzüvichü of Don Bosco HSS, Kohima on third with 98.17%.
The number of candidates who secured 80% and above in aggregate is 1,527, including 20 candidates are from government schools, the NBSE informed.
Marked improvement in HSSLC results
In the HSSLC results, however, there was marked improvement over last year, with past percentages increasing in Arts and Commerce streams. There was a marginal fall in the Science stream.
The overall pass percentage for Arts stream was 80.64% in 2022, up from 69.37% last year, while it was 88.24% for Commerce, against 74.39% last year.
The qualified candidates in Science stream fell from 91.35 in 2021 to 88.24% in 2022. The pass percentage in 2021 was highest in recent years, followed by 2022.
A total of 30 institutions— 16 under Arts stream, 10 under Science stream and 4 under Commerce stream— secured 100% pass result.
Limasungla of Christian HSS Dimapur topped the Arts stream with 97.60% while Subhansu Jaiswal of Holy Cross HSS Dimapur secured top position in Commerce with 98.60%.
With a pass percentage of 95.20%, Ngamjong JN Yanlem of St John Higher Secondary Residential School, Dimapur, took the honour in Science stream.
There were 2 toppers from Government HSS in HSSLC Merit list in Arts stream–Neithozonuo of GHSS Jotsoma ranked 4th with 95.80% and Tianaro Kichu of GHSS Chümoukedima with 94.00%.
Girls solidify dominance
In the recent past, there has been growing trend of girls outperforming boys in the HSLC and HSSLC exams, and this was further solidified this year. This is attested by the total pass percentage as well as the number of toppers in both Class 10 and 12.
In the HSLC, a total of 10,021 girls qualified the examination against 8,700 boys. More significantly, in the top 20 merit list, out of 62 candidates, 44 were girls while the rest were boys.
In HSSLC examination, the pass percentage of girls were 85.66 %, 88.03 % and 93.07 % in Arts, Commerce and Science streams respectively against the boys’ percentage of 70.80 %,78.71%, and 82.92%.
In the top-ten stream-wise performances, 15 girls featured in Arts stream against 3 for boys, while in Science stream it was 9 and 7 respectively.
Only in the Commerce stream, boys had a slight edge with 8 in the top-ten list, against 5 girls.
