The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on NH-2(Niropen to Hammock Resort) has expressed concern over the ongoing road construction along National Highway 2 (formerly NH-61) within Wokha Town (Niropen to Hammock Resort), citing poor quality, lack of supervision, and disregard for public interest.
Despite continuous monitoring, the JAC found the progress and execution unsatisfactory. Construction is being carried out without a qualified technical team, and there is no visible supervision from the National Highway Authority, it stated. It said that such negligence raises questions about accountability and commitment to public welfare.
Of particular concern is the recent attempt to fill potholes during heavy rainfall, which is technically unsound and counterproductive. On September 14, JAC members observed laborers filling potholes without proper machinery, seemingly to create an impression of progress rather than ensuring lasting repair. The JAC urged that roadwork be carried out only under suitable weather conditions and with proper equipment to ensure durability and safety.
The committee also highlighted incomplete paver block installations, improper finishing of stone slabs, incomplete drainage and culvert systems leading to waterlogging, and even blacktopping during rainy days. These practices, the JAC stressed, compromise both durability and safety.
Further, the absence of coordination among departments and inadequate supervision has compounded the problems. The JAC called on the concerned departments and district administration to conduct strict, periodic inspections to ensure quality control and accountability.
At the same time, the JAC appealed to the public for cooperation, especially during the laying of stone slabs on road flanks, as public participation is often necessary for smooth execution. In several cases, disturbances caused by landowners have delayed the work.
Civil societies have also been urged to engage actively in ensuring that construction is carried out to the required standards. The JAC encouraged citizens to promptly report defects or areas needing attention, noting that Committee members cannot be present at every site at all times.
Stressing that public infrastructure must serve the community and not individual interests, the JAC described the road as a lifeline for all and stressed that its proper construction must be ensured through collective responsibility.
