Nagaland observes World Red Cross Day

Nagaland state branch, Indian Red Cross Society today observed World Red Cross Day here under the theme “What you love about Red Cross.”

World Red Cross Day marks the birth anniversary of Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of Red Cross.

Gracing the occasion as special guest, rural development advisor Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire expressed his happiness over the contribution and involvement of the state branch in many humanitarian activities in the state.

He called upon the members to do more things for others who are in need of help or in distress.

Stating that humility promotes mutual understanding, friendship, peaceful coexistence, Dr. Kire said that any sort of discrimination should not prevail and at the same time one has also to do away with negativity.

Dr. Kire suggested the state branch to tie up with Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority for disaster response related trainings of Red Cross members which will enable them to be mentally and physically prepare if any sort of calamity hits the state.

“We need to have disaster preparedness in mind,” he said.

He also said that joining the Red Cross should be with the interest of helping people out of their own concern and not for personal interest. 

People should learn to be humble whenever they are helping others. Dr. Kire also mentioned that everyone, be it members of the Red Cross or not, should keep in mind the seven principles of Red Cross; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. 

These seven principles, he said, will help in sharing equal response during the times of disasters in the state. 
He furthered shared an issue which the IRCSN could play a part: prevention of HIV/AIDS by interacting and educating the people, especially the youths.

IRCS Nagaland state branch general secretary Dr. Kepelhusie Terhiija stressed on the need to change the culture of violence into a culture of non-violence and peace.

In this, he called upon the people to come forward and make it happen.

He said that India will be celebrating 100 years of being a part of Red Cross. 

He also suggested that under the leadership of the Governor, who is the President of IRCSN, they would device 'birds heaven', a place where they would save the birds and introduce in all the different districts. 

Dr. Terhiija informed that pamphlets on Red Cross will be distributed to the various schools and colleges soon. 

Students of Mt. Sinai Higher Secondary School and Holy Family Higher Secondary School presented special number. Earlier, Temjenmongba Sempo, pastor Kohima Ao Baptist Church invoked God’s blessings.

Dimapur: The Dimapur district Red Cross Society celebrated the World Red Cross Day under the theme ‘What you love about Red Cross’ with DC Dimapur, Kevekha Kevin Zehol, who is also the President of IRCS Dimapur, as special guest and Swami Chinmaynanda Ji Maharaj as guest of honour at Pranabananda Women's College, Dimapur on May 8.
Addressing the gathering, the DC highlighted his many years of association with the Red Cross Society at state and national level, saying “the utmost and real joy in life is helping others we don't know and will never know,” stated a DIPR report. 

He expressed concern over the incomplete district Red Cross building which has been left unattended for some time and the immediate need of a hearse to cater to the needs of the society. He further called upon the office bearers to enroll more members in the district.

Speeches were also delivered by guest of honour and President District Citizen Forum, Joseph Lemtur. The programme was chaired by Managing Committee member, Kuldeep Jain while welcome address and vote of thanks were proposed by Chairman, IRCS Dimapur District Branch, Chandu Agarwal and Honorary Secretary, IRCS, Dimapur District Branch, KK Paul respectively.

Wokha: World Red Cross Day was held at Wokha under the Theme ‘What you love about Red Cross’ at DBHSS Youth Centre on May 8.

Chairman, IRCS Wokha Branch & Deputy Commissioner, Dr.Manazir Jeelani Samoon, IAS said that the International Red Cross movement is an International humanitarian movement with approximately 17 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide which was formed to protect human life and health to ensure respect for all human being and to prevent and alleviate human suffering, it was founded in 1863 at Geneva, Switzerland.

Manazir said that it is the largest humanitarian organization in the World. He added that the main function of the Red Cross Society is to extend aid to soldier and victims of war, disaster relief, blood collection and to provide community education and outreach.

While speaking on district he said that there are about 112 life members in the district, and expressed the need to spread awareness on this organization for more enrollments and urged the youths of the district and the government servants to come forward and rededicate themselves for the benefit of the district. He also urged the board members to deliberate on the improvement in the district.

Honorary Secretary, IRCS Wokha, Dr KZ Ovung also highlighted the activities and work undertaken by IRCS Wokha Branch during the past five years.

Rev.Dr. Tsanso while dwelling on the theme urged the gathering to honour the founders of the humanitarian Society, he also said each year Red Cross volunteers extend humanitarian services to about 300 million people. He also emphasized on the seven fundamental principles of Red Cross society.
