Mon, November 30 (MExN): The Nagaland Government’s November 18 notification regarding nomination of an Advisory Council to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state continued to face opposition.
On Tuesday, the Chi and Mon Landowners Association (CMLOA) voiced its opposition in a representation to the Mon Deputy Commissioner, asking him to “keep the task of constituting Advisory Council to the Mon Town Council in abeyance.”
It also referred to the “1964 Agreement signed between the landowner villages of Mon Town (Chi & Mon) and the Government of Nagaland,” pointing out that the agreement “stands only in paper and is yet to be implemented.” In this connection, the Association has had submitted numerous appeal letters and memorandums to the competent authority but till date we are yet to receive convincing response from the government, it said, while adding that it boycotted the last election to the Mon Town Council through a legal notice.
“Under the circumstance stated above, we request your high authority to kindly keep the task of constituting Advisory Council to the Mon Town Council in abeyance to avoid any public outcry,” the representation stated.
Candidates of Tizit ULB election
In another representation to the DC, submitted through the Tizit Additional Deputy Commissioner, a group of individuals representing candidates of the 2017 ULB Election in Tizit town opposed the nomination of an Advisory Council, until counting of votes from the last election is done.
While the ULB election was conducted in Tizit on February 1, 2017 with 33 % reservation for women as per the state Election Commission of Nagaland, all the ballot boxes of the candidates were kept in the strong room at ADC Office Tizit as the state government subsequently issued an order for withholding the election. The ballot boxes were later shifted to Tizit police station for safe custody and are lying unattended at Tizit police station till date, it said.
Expressing its opposition to the November 18 notification, the group stated that “no such appointment will be made to Tizit Town Council until and unless the counting of vote from the Ballot Boxes of the candidates is counted [sic].”
Further, the group sought the DC’s intervention stating that it would be forced to take any course of action in the near future, if he failed to intervene.
The representation was appended by the following individuals: K Teijat Wangnao (Industry Ward), A Mihjat Wangnao (Medical Ward), Pumen Konyak (Pongma Ward), Penjoak Konyak (Pentom Ward), Yingtai Wangchea (Forest Ward), Apeh Konyak (Yanlem Ward), Aman Konyak (Soalam Ward), Nginyong Konyak (Police Ward), C Ayan (ADC Ward), and Noklem Konyak (ADC Ward).
