In just one year, Nagaland Police has seized assorted illegal drugs worth Rs 117.28 crore in the illicit global market, a senior officer informed on June 26, while implying that many might have escaped detection by the law enforcing agencies due to various reasons.

Presenting the supply reduction scenario in the state during the during the observance of the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima, Superintendent of Police, Narcotic Cell, Police Headquarters (PHQ), Bendang Jamir informed that the seizures were from June 2021 till date.

The seized drugs included Heroin, Brown Sugar, Opium, Ganja, Yaba, Synthetic Drugs, Imported Methamphetamine, Cigarette, and Cough syrup (see table).

Despite such seizures, Jamir viewed that consumption’s rate still stands high and many smuggling escapes law enforcing agencies due to porous borders as well as other  technical challenges.

Some routes in the region cannot be manned or checked, especially the international borders in Noklak and Mon districts, he maintained.

These routes, the officer added, cannot be monitored by the law enforcing agencies because the links are mostly footpath and cannot be tracked.

Further from the Assam border, he informed that synthetic drugs are being smuggled through unmanned entry and exit points.

Towards this end, Jamir  suggested for development of a strong mechanism between the law enforcing agency and all stakeholders to reduce drug flow.
