At 4 deaths per 1000 live births, Nagaland has the lowest infant mortality rate (IMR), according the Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin released recently by the Registrar General of India.

Madhya Pradesh with an IMR of 48 was highest among the states and union territories in India, followed by Uttar Pradesh (43) and Assam 41, it stated, based on data collected for 2018,

Nagaland IMR has been gradually declining over the years. During the previous SRS Bulletin, with 2017 as the reference point, the state managed to cut down the IMR to 7, the lowest in India.

While other states/UTs have improved thereafter, a decline by 3 for Nagaland ensured that it retained the best performer tag in terms of bringing down IMR.

Overall, the data released by the Registrar General of India informed that the IMR has declined significantly over the years from 129 in 1971 to 32 in 2018.

The largest decline in IMR has been registered by Mizoram with a decline from 15 to 5, and was second after Nagaland. Sikkim, Goa and Kerala shared the third spot with an IMR of 7.

However, Kerala''s IMR was lowest among the large states and the only single digit among the cohort.
