Nagaland: The Animal Rescue Team of Nagaland Zoological Park

The Animal Rescue Team of Nagaland Zoological Park, led by Thripong Sangtam, FRO, rescued a fawn Barking Deer (Muntiacus muntjac) from Thahekhu village of Dimapur district on July 28. The Director of NZP, Dr C Zupeni Tsanglai, IFS lauded the efforts to save fawn by Hithono, Kikimye and Totoi children of Kevin Yepthomi. The Director in a statement said that the Barking deer also known Indian Muntjacs or Rib-faced deer are small deer native to South and South-East Asia and is a Schedule III species protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. She said, ‘such effort in bringing wild species to zoo for rehabilitation is a notable contribution towards the conservation of the declining wild population in our State.’
