Faith, identity and AI-era challenges discussed at Phom theological conference
Longleng, May 28 (MExN): Questions around faith, identity, land and the growing influence of artificial intelligence and digital culture formed the focus of discussions during the 40th conference of the Phom Laaihing Vangsha Pangthai (PLVP), or Phom Theological Conference, held from May 22 to 24 at BuraNamsang Baptist Attoi in Longleng district.
Held under the theme ‘Theology in a Digital Age,’ the conference brought together more than 400 PLVP members and community participants from across the region. Organisers stated that the deliberations centred on how theology and Christian practice can remain relevant amid rapid technological change and increasing digital domination.
A press release informed that the conference explored how believers can engage with technology while remaining rooted in faith, identity and community values. Discussions also focused on the “safe and beneficial use of digitals” and the continuing relevance of theology in an increasingly AI-driven world.
Among the key sessions were “Who are we without land?” presented by PLVP President Bachem Phom, “The Joy of serving: A reflection” by missionary Chingnyi, “Theology in a Digital Age” by Rev Beaü, Pastor LTBC, and “Theology in a violent world” by Moishen M Phom, Literature Secretary of the Phom Baptist Christian Association (PBCA).
The conference also highlighted environmental stewardship. Delegates and villagers participated in a sapling plantation drive and attended a session on “theological students being an environmental praxis” delivered by Chulei, Christian Education Secretary of PBCA. As part of the PBCA Green Mission 2026 theme “One household one plant,” a total of 320 saplings were donated by the PBCA.
Advisor of PLVP, P Angbhenla Phom, also conducted a special session for in-campus students and fresh graduates focusing on campus life management, academic discipline, moral values and relationships with local churches.
During the conference, Volume 6 of the PLVP Journal, featuring articles from ten contributors, was released by PBCA Executive Secretary N Tialemba Phom.
Bachem Phom and advisor P Angbhenla Phom were released from their responsibilities after serving for ten years. A new team led by Moishen M Phom as president, along with nine team members, was introduced.
Established in 1985 under the PBCA, the PLVP comprises theological students from 55 churches under the association and focuses on theological reflection, community service, environmental initiatives and preservation of biblical teachings.
