A Special Shramik Train which was supposed to depart from Bengaluru on May 28 and reach Dimapur on May 31 has been “deferred.” Altogether 1,610 Nagaland citizens were supposed to board the train.

This was confirmed to The Morung Express by Dinesh Kumar, IAS, Coordinator for train booking and added that the State Government would decide in due course of time for rescheduling the train.

Other official sources said that the train has been cancelled since the quarantine centres in Dimapur and Kohima would be overwhelmed with more returnees as most of the earlier returnees are yet to be discharged.

Meanwhile, the Naga Task Force Bengaluru, Convenor for COVID-19, Mughato D Kiba informed on May 27 that many Nagas from different districts of Karnataka had reached and many would be reaching Bengaluru city in the evening with the hope of returning home. He said while the Naga Task Force was in the process to facilitate persons wanting to return home, there was a sudden information about deferment of train from the Karnataka government.

“Later, the nodal officer of Nagaland Government, Mohammad Ali Shihab informed me of the same. In advance, we had already arranged for their stay for tonight for those coming outside Bengaluru city but since almost all of them outside Bengaluru have already vacated their homes, now we are trying to arrange some shelter homes for them for the next few days,” he added.

“With the hope of going home, many Nagas here have spent almost all their money on buying things for people back home and left with only little amount to travel back,” he added.

Kiba also informed that although the Nagaland Government had asked the Karnataka Government to arrange shelters for Nagas outside Bengaluru, he was yet to receive any communication from the Karnataka Government till the filing of this report.
