Nagaland: Training on NCD screening in Mokokchung

Mokokchung, September 22 (MExN): Two-day training on NCD screening (national programme for prevention and control of cancer, diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases and stroke) for SMO, MO, Ayush MO, CHO and nurses was held at the conference hall, Office of the Chief Medical Officers, Mokokchung on September 20 and 21. 

Delivering the welcome address, Dr Limatula Aier, CMO Mokokchung urged the health workers to learn from the training and deliver quality health care at their respective health centres.

Dr Sentirenla, MO (Dental) IMDH in her presentation explained about causes of oral cancer screening, the different methods/ways to detect lumps, lesions or sores, seven steps of month self examination, when to do Biopsy, types of biopsy and different treatment like counseling, behavioral interventions, pharmacotherapy, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). She stated that early detection of oral cancer plays a vital role on patients which can increase survival chances. 

Dr Alemba R Jamir, SMO (Medicine) IMDH, in his presentation presented about management of diabetes and its complications. Diabetes which is a chronic disease and major risk factor for other chronic diseases, objectives and strategies of NPCDCS, Role of Medical Officers, when to suspect, diet and exercise, advice specific for diabetes patient, life style modification, management of complications, diagnosis and management, protocol based management of hypertension, classification of hypertension (primary and secondary hypertension) and strategies to prescribe anti-hypertensive drugs. 

He also advocated measures to build capacity at various levels of health care for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common NCDs.

Dr Subongmeren, MD (ONG) IMDH presented about breast cancer screening, cervix cancer screening and VIA procedure, benefits and limitations. He stated that breast cancer is a treatable disease and chances of survival are higher if detected in time. Breast cancer ranked number one cancer among Indian females and it is also reported that every minutes an Indian women is diagnosed with breast cancer. 

The trainees were trained on disease burden and trend, anatomy and physiology of breast, breast cancer risk factors, major and intermediate risk factors, breast cancer, breast self examination, cervix cancer screening, barriers to cervical cancer screening, how to perform VIA procedures, (Visual Inspection with Acidic Acid) VIA, documentaries of findings of VIA, advantages, drawbacks.
