The Tuli Railway Station in Nagaland is currently open only for handling outward goods traffic, while passenger train services remain suspended, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly was informed on Tuesday.

Responding to a query from MLA Nuklutoshi, the Minister-in-Charge for Transport, P Paiwang Konyak, stated that the passenger train service from Amguri to Tuli, operational from December 2002 to July 2005, was terminated by the Railways due to poor patronage.

Regarding the delay in resuming passenger train services, Konyak explained that the Nagaland Government had urged the Railways to extend the rail line from Tuli Railway Station to Tuli town via the Nagaland Pulp & Paper Company Limited (NPPC Ltd). However, the proposal was deemed economically unviable.

According to the Railway Board’s Rate of Return (ROR) assessment, the projected traffic volume was too low, with an ROR of (-) 7.08%.

Consequently, the project was shelved as per the Railway Board’s letter dated July 24, 2018, the Minister informed the House.
