LUMAMI, SEPTEMBER 9 (MExN): Nagaland University, the only Central University in the State, has registered an improvement in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, securing a place in the 151–200 rank band.
The results were announced on September 4 at an awards function in New Delhi by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Vice Chancellor Prof Jagadish K Patnaik said the development was significant as the University had been out of the 151–200 band for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024). “Now we are back in the reckoning. I hope next year we will get into the top 100. All this is possible because of the efforts and dedication of all stakeholders,” he said.
Key initiatives that contributed to the improved performance include strengthening research and innovation, upgrading laboratories and ICT-enabled classrooms, organising faculty development programmes, enhancing student support through placements and scholarships, adopting digital platforms, engaging in community outreach and ensuring transparent governance.
Prof Patnaik has also been recognised as a dynamic leader for “Excellent Performance in the physical progress of Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA)-funded projects” for Nagaland University. The citation was conferred by Mohammad Thorpic, Managing Director and CEO, HEFA.
HEFA, a joint venture between the Ministry of Education and Canara Bank set up in 2017, provides financial support for developing infrastructure in higher educational institutions.

With HEFA funding, Nagaland University has taken up several projects including a new Science Faculty Building, an Administrative Building and a VIP Guest House at its headquarters in Lumami. At the Kohima campus, a six-storied School of Engineering and Technology building with 25 rooms for each of its six departments has been completed, along with permanent buildings for the Departments of Hindi, Tenyidie and Linguistics. Medziphema campus has also received a new Administrative Building, while more projects are in the pipeline.
The 10th edition of the NIRF India Ranking Results was released by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the presence of Minister of State for Education Dr Sukanta Majumdar, Higher Education Secretary Dr Vineet Joshi, AICTE Chairman Prof TG Sitharam, NBA Chairman Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe and NBA Member Secretary Dr Anil Kumar Nassa.

Launched in 2015, NIRF evaluates institutions on five parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practices; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception.
