Observance of Anti-Ragging Day at NU Kohima Campus, Meriema on August 12.

Kohima, August 12 (MExN): The Nagaland University, Kohima Campus (NUKC) Meriema today observed Anti-Ragging Day . The programme observed the start of the anti-ragging week as declared by University Grants Commission (UGC).
Dr Temsulemba Walling, Associate Dean of Students’ Welfare, NUKC, delivered the welcome address, wherein he mentioned that NUKC has not had any reported incidents of ragging.
That the tendency of Nagas to respond to and help others in need should continue to be a culture that collectively elevates against the alien culture of ragging. With the increasing diversity in the NUKC community, Dr. Walling emphasised that the good aspects of different cultures should be encouraged and emulated; In addition, to discourage bringing the scourge of bullying or ragging into society.
Invitee, Prof. Jano S. Liegise, Dean, School of Humanities & Education, NUKC, addressed the gathering, reminding of the campus as a ‘vibrant multidisciplinary campus’ which is relatively free from the menace of ragging; applauding the student community to continue the good reputation while also to serve anyone who may face problems in the future. Prof. Liegise mentions the ban on ragging by the Supreme Court of India in 2001 and 2011 legal frameworks after a series of tragedies. In observing the Anti-ragging day, she reminds the gathering to remember the victims of such tragic incidents, which could have been avoided with timely intervention. Prof. Liegise urges NUKC to create a safe, peaceful learning academic space within and outside the campus. Concluding the speech, she reminds and reinforces the importance of the collective effort in respecting one another; that “the best in us comes out and the best in others gets highlighted”.
In celebration of the occasion and with an aim to continue creating awareness, the NUKC also organized competitions: Poster making competition under the theme- ‘My Campus, My Safe Place’ and videography competition under the theme- ‘Disrupt the Silence, Foster the Connection.’ Prizes for these competitions were handed out during the program. The first and second prizes for the poster making competition were bagged by Iranwang Daime, Dept. of English, and Cecilia, Dept. of Teacher Education, respectively. Mhonthung Kikon, Dept. of History & Archaeology, won the videography competition, and the gathering witnessed a screening of the winner’s video.
A short speech was delivered by Beben Y. Kithan, President of NU Students’ Union, NUKC. Kithan mentions that ragging in any form violates human dignity, inflicts lasting scars, and erodes trust. That as a community, “we ought to keep a campus culture where everyone feels safe and is respected; that our legacy reflects kindness, unity, and progress.”
