Kohima, December 8 (MExN): The Director of Plans and Policy (National Disaster Management Authority, Ministry of Home Affairs) R.K. Singh accompanied by Officials of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) visited Mokokchung on December 6 so as to give hand hold support to DDMA Mokokchung and to brief them on the ‘National School Safety Project’ (NSSP) which is to be implemented by the NDMA in the two districts of Mokokchung and Kohima.
The Director visited Mayangnokcha Higher Secondary, which is one the schools identified for the implementation of the project. While addressing the gathering R. K. Singh said that NSSP is a Pilot project undertaken by the NDMA to be implemented in states which come under the fourth and fifth seismic zone.
Adding that altogether 43 districts have been identified across India for the NSSP, R.K. Singh said that the Bhuj Earthquake was a lesson for the Country as a huge number of school children died because of unsafe buildings. Referring to the recent Sikkim earthquake, he said that the same scene was repeated as a huge number of schools were destroyed.
The Director also informed that under the NSSP one school from the two identified districts will be retrofitted (a procedure which makes buildings earthquake safe) he advised that schools should practice safety measures/evacuation plans as disasters can occur without warning.
An introduction on the NSSP was given b ADC Mokokchung, K. Yhome. In his short speech he said that the NSSP is a pilot project 100% sponsored by the Central Government through the NSDMA. While expressing his appreciation towards the NDMA for bringing up this much needed project, the ADC also added that through this project, awareness would be generated which would in turn help in capacity building.
The welcome address was given by the Principal Mayangnokcha Higher Secondary and the programme was chaired by Tia Naro. The programme ended with a display of emergency rescue methods by the students of the school.
The Director also met the members of the DDMA Mokokchung and guided the new initiative taken by the DDMA. R. K. Singh in his interaction with the DDMA members stressed on the urgency to strengthen the institution of all DDMAs with adequate manpower to make it active in its phase of pre and post disaster. The meeting was attended by the ADC, SDO (Civil), SDPO, members from Town Council and representative from PWD.
