Dimapur, June 27 (MExN): With the objective of exploring the avenues and opportunities as well as understand the challenges of social work, the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Dimapur on June 26 organised a webinar on the theme, ‘Scope and Challenges of Social Work Practice in 21st Century.’
A press release from the institute said that the resource person at the webinar were Dr Shampa Nag, Co-founder and Steering Committee Member Global Civil Society Network for Malaria Elimination (CS4ME); Itulungbe Ndang, President Nagaland Professional Social Workers Association (NPSWA); and Namghaklung Christopher, Programme Officer for North East West (NEW) of CBR Forum, Bangalore.
Dr Shampa highlighted that in order to be a social worker, one needs to be very passionate and grounded.
In times of this pandemic when social workers are not able reach out to community people effectively, one should look out for ways and means to reach out to them either through various virtual platforms or reach out to them physically with proper precautionary measures, she said.
She also spoke about the concept of Community Champion and the importance of networking with like-minded groups, organisations and people.
Speaking on the on the principles and scope of social work, Itulungbe noted that social work organisations and NGOs will need to work on new projects to tackle post-covid challenges.
He also spoke on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Niti Aayog which is a public policy think tank of the Government of India, established with the aim to achieve SGDs with cooperative federalism.
Namghaklung highlighted about the approaches of CRR (Community Based Rehabilitation) to work for persons with disability.
CBR approach can be used in tackling various community related issues and problem and need not be restricted to working for persons with disability alone, he said, further encouraging the students to engage with people and have passion to help the community saying, ‘If there’s a will, there’s a way’.
Earlier, Livino S Zhimo, MSW 2nd Semister, NEISSR, MC of the day, welcomed all the participants and introduced the dignitaries and resource persons while Rev Dr Fr CP Anto, Principal NEISSR, Founder and Director of Peace Channel welcomed all the resource persons.
