NFR marks 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

Maligaon, October 2 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) marked the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with ceremonial tributes and a significant green initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste.

NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava led the observance by lighting a lamp and offering floral tributes at the NFR headquarters in Maligaon. Senior officials and staff participated in events across various locations, reaffirming the railway's commitment to Gandhian ideals, a press note said.

As part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign, NFR introduced compostable bags for bedroll distribution onboard 29 Mail/Express trains originating from stations including Naharlagun, Agartala, and Guwahati. These bags, manufactured by IIT Guwahati, are eco-friendly and decompose naturally without leaving harmful residues.

The initiative, funded by the State Bank of India under its Corporate Social Responsibility, brings the total number of trains under this green initiative to 55. A tree plantation program was also conducted at the Maligaon complex.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Railways launched Special Campaign 5.0, a month-long cleanliness drive from October 2 to 31, focusing on scrap disposal, e-waste management, and space optimization. The campaign will include cleanliness drives and public awareness programs at major stations, including 105 Amrit Bharat Stations.
