MALIGAON, APRIL 9 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a crucial milestone in the construction of the new Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Panbazar with the successful launch of a 60-meter Bow String Girder. The operation, which was executed flawlessly, took place during a well-coordinated 3-hour traffic block on the night of April 8, 2025.
The new ROB is set to replace the existing structure, which was built in 1965 and has since been dismantled due to its deteriorating condition. The old bridge had been plagued by various operational and structural issues, including limited vertical and horizontal clearances, a permanent speed restriction of 15 km/h, and a “dead wire zone” that hindered electric locomotive operations. Additionally, recurring water-logging during heavy rains disrupted train movements and passenger services in the area.
The new 60-meter span bridge is designed to overcome these challenges, providing enhanced clearances that will eliminate speed restrictions and allow for the smooth movement of electric locomotives. Elevated track levels will address water-logging concerns, ensuring seamless operations even during the monsoon season.
In addition to its technical upgrades, the project is key to the remodelling of the Guwahati station yard, creating space for additional platforms and better passenger amenities. The new three-lane carriageway, expanded from the previous two-lane configuration, will help ease road congestion and improve urban traffic flow.
Despite challenges posed by limited space near the Fire Brigade station for material storage and logistics, the project has made steady progress. Significant milestones so far include the completion of foundational structures, the successful fabrication and positioning of the bow string girders, and the use of innovative Geo-cell technology for sub-soil strengthening to ensure long-term durability and stability.
Throughout the construction process, regular inspections by authorized agencies have ensured that stringent quality and safety standards are met. NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava personally reviewed the project’s progress and directed officials to ensure its timely completion. With the successful girder launch, the ROB project is now in its final phase and is expected to significantly enhance both rail and road connectivity in Guwahati.
