NMA demands fast-track trial of June 20 incident

Dimapur, June 28 (MExN): The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) on Monday wrote to the Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister demanding justice for a minor girl who was allegedly gangraped on June 20 near Aboi in Mon district.

The letter addressed to the Deputy Chief Minister who also holds the Home Minister’s portfolio drew attention to the “upsurge in vicious violence against girls and women when the State is fighting the COVID pandemic,” which it said, has added to the insecurity of lives.

According to the Mon police, the incident occurred some 4km from Aboi town when two young girls were reportedly waylaid by a group of six youths sometime before noon on June 20. Citing preliminary findings, a Mon police official had told The Morung Express that the one of the girls, a 15 year-old, was sexually assaulted, while the other, said to be a 14 year-old, managed to escape and inform relatives.  Two of the suspects were arrested the following day in June 21 and the remaining four were arrested on June 22.

While lauding the prompt action of the law enforcing agency in nabbing the accused, the Naga Mothers’ Association urged the State Government to take serious cognizance and ensure justice is delivered without delay. It demanded that stringent action be taken against the rapists as per the law and that no bail is granted to the accused.

It also sought trial by a fast-track court and demanded compensation, counselling and all assistance for the victim. “We believe that delivering timely justice to such victim will encourage people to have faith in the legal system,” the NMA stated.
