NPF refutes K Therie’s remarks

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 10 (MExN): The Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Wednesday took strong exception to the remarks made by former Nagaland minister K Therie, terming them as misrepresentations and reaffirming its commitment to secular values, Naga identity and inclusive politics.

In a statement issued by its press bureau, the party said its “Cock” symbol continues to carry the legacy of pioneers who worked with sincerity and vision, contrary to claims that it has lost relevance. “It remains a strong reminder of Naga unity, political struggle and democratic participation,” it said.

Rejecting allegations that the NPF and the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) have “surrendered to Hindutva” or turned anti-Christian, the party maintained that it has consistently upheld secularism, inclusivity and respect for all faiths. Political alliances, it said, are part of democratic processes and should not be mischaracterised.

On Therie’s claim that absolute power corrupts absolutely, the NPF said governance must be judged by policies and delivery. “Our constitutional system has checks and balances, and elected representatives are answerable to the people,” it said, adding that the state government continues to implement programmes in education, rural development and infrastructure.

The party also termed as “deeply irresponsible” allegations that its leadership colluded in the May 3, 2023 Manipur violence. It said the clashes were an outcome of tensions following a rally organised by the All-Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) over the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community, which later escalated into ethnic violence. “To attribute such complex and tragic events simplistically to political sponsorship is misleading and insensitive to the victims on all sides,” it added.

The NPF asserted that it remains committed to transparency, accountability and people-centric governance. “Our vision is to ensure that future generations inherit peace, dignity and grace,” the party said, appealing to political leaders, including Therie, to engage in constructive dialogue.

The party also called upon the Naga community to uphold the NPF in their prayers, reiterating its resolve to strengthen the regional political force.
