Following a ‘peaceful and successful’ first day of agitation, the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) on Monday announced that it would keep the agitation in abeyance, considering the demise of Nagaland Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Justice & Law, CM Chang.

“Officials of the two federations had a threadbare discussion on the developments of the day and unanimously decided to keep the agitation in abeyance considering the sudden and untimely demise of (Late) C M Chang, Minister, Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Justice & Law, Government of Nagaland as a mark of respect for the departed leader,” the presidents of the federations stated in a joint press release.

However, the same shall resume on October 19, it added.

The federations had launched the indefinite agitation across the state after the lapse of the 30-day joint ultimatum that was submitted to the state government on September 2 with regard to mainstreaming of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) teachers of 2010 and 2013 batch into the state education cadre.

On Monday, volunteers were seen at the various locations of the state capital Kohima, monitoring the movement of government registered vehicles.

The volunteers seized around seven government registered vehicles which were impounded at the Naga Solidarity Park. The vehicles will be released only after the demand of NSF and ENSF is met by the government.

Government vehicles of the medical department, district administration, police, fire emergency services, power, high court and postal duties, home guards, civil defence and SDRF were however exempted from the purview of the bandh.

No untoward incident reported at the time of filling this report.

Meanwhile, the joint statement from the federations informed that overall, 37 vehicles were seized by its federating units and subordinate bodies across the state.

All COVID-19 standard operating procedures were strictly adhered to by the volunteers during the agitation exercise, it said.

Further, the NSF and ENSF directed its federating units and sub-ordinate bodies “to put in place all necessary preparations in-order to ensure that the next phase of agitation is carried out successfully.”

It expressed gratitude to its units as well as the Naga people “for extending their solidarity towards the cause impacting a large section of the teaching community.”
